Inside Singapore’s #1 Restaurant on TripAdvisor: Entre-Nous Creperie

Ask any ‘foodie’ in Singapore what they think is Singapore’s number one rated restaurant on TripAdvisor and you will get a myriad of answers. Typical responses include fine dining establishments such as the 2 Michelin starred Les Amis, Odette and Waku Ghin or local favourites like New Ubin Seafood, Jumbo Seafood or Boon Tong Kee. One interesting guess was Restaurant Zen, an exciting new restaurant on Bukit Pasoh that the respondent guessed might have a meteoric rise the ranks akin to the way Core by Clare Smyth has quickly risen on TripAdvisor’s London rankings. Many people are surprised when I tell them on the contrary, a relatively low key French crêperie has held the prestigious title for almost two years!

Entre-Nous Creperie is located on Seah Street, very near the iconic (and soon to be reopened) Raffles Hotel and the Raffles City shopping centre. The cosy restaurant was started in 2008 by two partners from France, Stéphane and Geraldine who have been passionately running the business with a high level of quality. I tried their classic buckwheat galette with egg, ham and emmental cheese (a superb rendition on the classic) on a previous visit so this time round, I tried some of their more unique offerings.

I’d highly recommend always getting some of their superb Kerné cider which they exclusively import directly from Brittany (Geraldine’s home region). Served in a traditional ‘Bolée’ cup, the artisan cider is mildly acidic, gently sweet and has exquisite balance. Notes of apple, honey and vanilla are immediately present on the palate and I was extremely impressed by the depth of this delicious drink. Superb!

On to the main event, prepared on special pans called ‘Biligs’ imported from Brittany. Stéphane expertly prepared an exquisitely thin savoury buckwheat flour galette and covered it with a vibrant green layer of crushed avocados with a dash of cream and garlic. On top of this, fresh prawns and chopped tomatoes are added. The crisp, light crêpe proved the perfect foil for the smooth, creamy avocado while the dash of garlic adds that bit of complexity that many avocado dishes lack. Tomato always works with avocado in my opinion and the chopped chunks of red contrasted beautifully with their green bed and provided a delightful sweet-sour tang every time I bit into one. If you are looking for something on top of their classics, get this.

For dessert, Entre-Nous serves up sweet crepes prepared with wheat flour. You can never go wrong with stalwarts like their homemade salted butter or butter and sugar options. However, if you’d like to try something a bit more special, try the “Faustine’s Favourite”. This crêpe comes liberally doused in a rich homemade chocolate sauce studded with grated coconut. A scoop of coconut sorbet (all their ice creams and homemade) takes pride of place in the centre of the dish. My favourite childhood chocolate bar was Bounty (chocolate bars stuffed with coconut) so this was familiar but elevated. The lashings of decadent chocolate sauce paired beautifully with the soft crêpe and cold ice cream.

If you’re on a vegetarian or gluten-free diet, fret not because every crêpe at Entre-Nous can be prepared with buckwheat flour and there are numerous meat-free options available. Entre-Nous is quietly serving up one of the most faithful French culinary experiences in Singapore and I would strongly urge everyone to give them a try.
