Pétanque in Singapore : how and where to play?

The Pétanque Tournament 2024 took place this past weekend at Castle Beach, bringing together passionate players and enthusiasts for a day filled with friendly competition, laughter, and a shared love for the game. Organized by the French Chamber of Commerce Singapore (FCCS), the event saw a great turnout, with participants from all over the city, enjoying the warm weather and scenic beachfront.

The tournament was a great success, with teams battling it out in close matches, and even those new to the sport had a chance to experience the joy of pétanque. A huge thank you to our sponsors (Citadelle Gin, Bonne Maman, Lillet, Ricard, LPB Market, Vintage Wine Club, Classic Fine Foods for the Evian & Vittel waters) who made the event possible and added to its vibrant atmosphere—your support has been invaluable!

If the tournament has piqued your interest, here’s a little more about this popular French game and how you can get involved!

Originating from the South of France, pétanque is a beloved French sport that brings people together for friendly competition. Played with metal balls (called “boules”) on a gravel or sandy surface, the goal is to throw your boule as close as possible to a small wooden ball known as the “cochonnet.” This centuries-old game has grown in popularity worldwide, including in Singapore, where the relaxed, social nature of pétanque is perfect for outdoor gatherings.

The rules of pétanque are simple yet strategic. Each player or team takes turns tossing their boules from a designated circle, aiming to get them as close to the cochonnet as possible. After all the boules have been thrown, the team with the closest boule scores a point for each boule closer than their opponent’s. The game continues until one team reaches 13 points. It’s a game of precision, strategy, and sometimes a bit of luck!

To play pétanque properly, the terrain is key. While gravel or compacted sand are traditional surfaces, parks with a sandy or flat gravel ground are perfect. Look for spaces with ample room and a soft surface that allows the boules to roll gently without bouncing too much. Trees offering shade are a bonus to help players stay cool in Singapore’s tropical heat. You can even set up a court yourself in a backyard with the right materials!
